I sank
Deep down to the sea floor of my heart.
Dark and cold as it was,
I saw nothing.
I felt nothing.
I loved no one.
Ugly creatures lived here,
But I didn’t know it.
They played dead in the sand
And only struck
When the time was right.
Yet they were always there.
Suddenly, though,
I felt something warm.
I saw something glow.
A red pool of lava
Gathered at my feet,
A volcanic hot spot
At the bottom of my heart.
The creatures swam away,
Unable to take the heat.
I was shot up,
Propelled by the great eruption,
Until I broke the water’s surface
And breathed again
And loved again.
This is lovely.
