Counting Calories

Daily writing prompt
Describe one positive change you have made in your life.

For about a month now, I’ve tried to consistently count the amount of calories I consume every day and record it. My husband, Kevin, had been doing it, and as you already know or might learn for yourself, dieting or exercising with someone else makes either a lot easier and even more fun for both of you. We use a free app called Macros to keep track of our daily intake when it comes to food and drink. It’s really nice to use; you start with setting up your profile and your goals. Then it takes maybe a week of reading many nutrition facts labels and inputting the information you need (primarily the calories, carbs, fat, and protein in each serving you eat). But after a while, you have a pretty robust personal library of foods and drinks that you can pick from to build your meals each day. And you can see if you’re consuming enough or consuming too much every day and adjust accordingly! You can focus on consuming more protein or whatever works toward the goals you’ve established.

It’s been a very recent positive change I’ve made in my life, and it’s already become routine enough that I can hopefully keep up with it. I’ve lost a few pounds, and Kevin has lost several. Macros can help us to not only continue to lose some weight, yet it can also help us once we decide to change our goals and begin to maintain a decent weight. The true point of using the app, for us anyway, is to work on our portion control, which seems to be working well! We can still eat and drink what we want as long as we account for it as part of the rest of our day. As they say, everything in moderation.

I used to be hesitant and, honestly, kind of lazy when it came to the idea of counting calories. Would it actually work for me? Would it be too much effort? The answers to these questions so far seem to be yes and no. It’s a positive change that’s been nothing but a win-win!
