An Epistolary Poem

Dear Tara,

Hard to believe that it’s been 15 years

Since we last saw each other.

You were just a girl back then, still in grade school.

Now you’ve grown up, and you’re starting your own family.

Your little boy… my great-grandson… he’s beautiful.

I’m sad I wasn’t able to meet him.

Same goes for your husband.

He’s been such a good man to you,

And he’s already an amazing father.

I’m sorry about your dad.

I wish I could tell you that he’ll change.

I truly hope he does.

But he’s like me in so many ways, Tara,

And, well… I never did.

I have so much to say, yet I can’t get through it.

Tell your mom I’m sorry and your brother, too.

I hate what happened to all of you.

Tell your grandma that I love her and miss her.

I try to show her every day.

I’m sorry, Tara.

I wanted to be better to you. I needed to be there for you.

I know this letter won’t be enough,

But as they say, better late than never.

Much love, Grandpa
