Late last year, Outdoor Project uploaded a blog post kicking off the #52AdventureChallenge. They presented a printable graphic of “52 geological features and adventure themes” and spurred ideas on how to complete each one in separate posts.
Being a connoisseur of anything related to the outdoors, my husband, Kevin, approached me with this graphic, and we decided to use this challenge to become weekend warriors. We needed–and still need!–to explore New England and the east coast, so we accepted the challenge and planned on completing the list to the best of our ability.
I’ll start by saying that it’s Week 13 of 2018, and we’ve managed to do 6 weeks. So we certainly aren’t being strict about finishing the challenge in a linear year and doing every feature/theme in numerical order. But this is what we’ve done so far!
Week 1: Snowventure – We went snowshoeing around Pats Peak, a ski resort in Henniker, NH.
Week 2: Frozen Water – We hiked to Arethusa Falls in Crawford Notch State Park, which is in the White Mountains area of NH.
Week 4: Sand – We froze our asses off checking out Jenness State Beach in NH and going further to ME to walk around Fort Popham.
Week 5: Birds – Timing was impeccable for this adventure, since there was an owl festival happening at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science.
Week 6: Passport Stamp – We spent a belated Valentine’s Day and long weekend in Quebec City, which was Kevin’s first international trip.
Week 11: Mountains – We kept it simple for this one and went skiing at Pico Mountain in VT.
Some of the adventures are geographically impossible, at the moment, such as Week 3: Desert and Week 7: Thermal Water. There’s obviously not a whole lot of either in New England. For other adventures, the weather is either a blessing or a curse. Week 9: Glamping would be pretty miserable right now, even if we stay in a nice, warm cabin in the woods. Plus, we just want to show a little financial restraint. Weeks 2 and 4 were both free activities, yet that was it. Rental and travel fees can add up over time!
Anyway, I think it’s been so far, so good with our challenge this year! I’ll keep you all posted on Part 2!
