Short Summary is an original series in which I write brief reviews of movies, TV shows, video games, books, and more. Spoiler alert, just in case!
“Eastwatch”
Time and distance don’t mean anything anymore on Game of Thrones. I realized this at the beginning of the season and haven’t mentioned it until now. But man, people are apparating all over Westeros. This is kind of ridiculous.
There’s no time to even think about these things when there’s two episodes left of season 7. “Eastwatch” keeps the season barreling forward, time and distance both be damned. Jaime’s alive! And Bronn must be an Olympic swimmer getting him to safety. Somehow, they make it back to King’s Landing in the same episode.
Meanwhile, in the aftermath of The Loot Train Attack The Field of Fire, Daenerys and Tyrion butt heads again. Randall and Dickon Tarly refuse to bend the knee, and Tyrion wants Dany to send Randall to the Wall and place Dickon in the black cells. That would be the old way of dealing with them. The wheel would turn like it always has. Yet Dany wants to break the wheel, remember? Dragonfire is Dany’s favorite and only execution method currently, so Drogon roasts the Tarlys alive. Tyrion and Varys later share a scene that likens Dany to her father, the Mad King, even more due to her increasingly alarming actions.
Season 7 is leaning heavily on reunions, although it makes sense at this point because different characters and their arcs are finally converging, and we’re heading for the finish line. Jorah and Daenerys have the least satisfying reunion so far when they should probably have a pretty emotional one. I mean, Jorah’s cured! He’s back! And Dany hugs him, but it left me wanting more out of both characters.
Bran shows up for a moment to warg into ravens and see the incoming White Walkers. He sends a message to Jon and the Citadel as a warning. The archmaesters of the Citadel deny the news, which pisses Sam off and causes him to take Gilly and Little Sam and get out. As for Jon, he, Tyrion, and Daenerys agree that bringing a wight to Cersei would convince her that the Long Night is coming and also encourage a temporary alliance. However, the last time someone brought the hand of a wight to King’s Landing, it had rotted away and didn’t prove anything. So we’ll have to see if second time’s the charm, I guess?
Before Jon can go ahead with this plan, they have to offer Cersei an armistice. Davos does what he does best and smuggles Tyrion to King’s Landing. Bronn actually facilitates the meeting between Tyrion and Jaime to pass the word on to Cersei. We don’t get a glimmer of any recognition between Tyrion and Bronn or any reconciliation between the Lannister brothers. The news that Tyrion is innocent of Joffrey’s death clearly means nothing when he’s still guilty of Tywin’s, and I get that. Though it’s like Tyrion and Bronn don’t even know each other, which sucks.
Surprisingly, Cersei accepts the armistice, most likely to buy time to instigate some secret plan she has with Qyburn. And surprisingly, she’s “pregnant.” I place that in quotes because I’m fairly positive she’s lying to keep Jaime soundly by her side, without question. It works, of course. I just feel like she’s doing it to manipulate him further. But we’ll have to see.
Not only does Tyrion have his reasons going to King’s Landing, but so does Davos. He finds freaking Gendry smithing for the Lannisters. It takes little to nothing to convince Gendry to join Jon’s cause. When those two inevitably meet, they trade jabs about each other and their dads, which is actually really funny. They’re treating each other like brothers or certainly like close friends, just as Robert and Ned did. Jon, Jorah, Davos, and Gendry all teleport to Eastwatch to meet up with Tormund and the Brotherhood. The ultimate dream team heads out to capture a wight, which is so risky that I’m deathly afraid that we’ll lose some of these beloved characters before the Long Night even starts.
Then there’s a subplot of Arya and Littlefinger out-spying one another to cause a rift between Arya and Sansa. Littlefinger continues to tear everything good in the world apart. God, there’s so much going on! It’s hard to talk about it all in equal measure and keep it brief! The penultimate episode of season 7 comes next week.
