Short Summary – GoT S7 E1

Short Summary is an original series in which I write brief reviews of movies, TV shows, video games, books, and more. Spoiler alert, just in case!

“Dragonstone”

I don’t think I’ve ever been so hyped up for any TV episode, ever. Not even for a single Game of Thrones episode prior to the season 7 premiere last night. This is the penultimate season of one of my favorite TV shows of all time. After 6 freaking seasons, Daenerys is on Westerosi soil and ready to truly begin her conquest. Jon continues being a badass as king in the North. Winter is, at long last, HERE. There’s a lot of reasons to be pumped. I’ve never felt such unbridled joy and anticipation sitting down in front of the TV.

Was it a super exciting episode? No. But have the previous 6 season premieres been exciting for this show? Hell no. That’s not the point. The point is that Game of Thrones is back, and it really excels in the small moments, as it always has. I’m actually looking forward to season 7 possibly returning to the show’s roots, although in hindsight, I doubt it’ll do much of that. Especially since there’s now only 12 episodes left in the whole series.

I’m not going to reveal any in-depth information, if I can help it. I might in a later post. For now, I’m just going to point out what I think were the best aspects of this premiere. So uh, obviously, Arya. Full stop. Her scenes in this episode were top-notch. The scenes between Jon and Sansa were also great. The tension between them only grows, and both of them have good points. But personally, I feel like Jon is ultimately right. Plus, Euron. The guy’s a dick, but he fires off one particular insult that got a legitimate laugh out of me in that moment. As I mentioned earlier, Dany arrives in Westeros. That’s only been 6 years in the making, you know. And Sam gets a funny and awfully gross montage of his time at the Citadel, which was surprising yet in a good way.

Honestly, for me, there’s nothing wrong with “Dragonstone.” It’s a fine first episode. I’ve read other reviews in which people complain about this episode being too slow. I take no issue with that. If there’s one slow episode in season 7, I’d much rather have it be the premiere than any other episode. The rest of the season can get ramped up from here, and I’m alright with that. Another huge complaint people have, apparently, is Ed Sheeran’s cameo, and no, that’s not a spoiler. Anyone with an Internet connection knew that he joined the cast for this season. I recognized that man’s silky vocals the moment he started singing, and it was awesome. I believe that anyone who thought that scene was ruined by his presence is taking all of this way too seriously.

I’m interested to see what happens in episode 2!
